ANN OLIVER
After recently travelling throughout Europe and Viet Nam I was inspired to develop a series of ceramic creatures that captured the essence of different cultures.
The gargoyles that guarded the cathedrals of France, dragon and elephant- like creatures that protected the ancient temples in Viet Nam, and Nordic serpents that wove through Scandinavian mythology were the starting points for my work.
I wanted to encompass the bold shapes, vibrant colours and mystique of cultures past, into creatures that are fun and whimsical rather than serious.
Working with clay has always been a joy for me and by creating these large sculptures they invoked memories of the sights, smells and cultures of my holiday adventures.
