The Intimate Landscape - Patricia Cale

Where I am living in Imbil, I overlook the Mary Valley to the East - this is a wide vista and that is the aspect influencing 3 of the 'Life in Small Town' Works.
The painting of the dam is, I hope an indication of the unnatural  plunging of a natural landscape into deep water.
The other works are about the detritus gathered in our lives and the dream-state that we conjure in order to escape.

Moon Water - Wendy Nugent

"The only way to regain lost time, is through a work of art" . Proust.

The land and its monumental qualities exert a powerful influence on Wendy Nugent's work. Art to her is a form of communication - a dialogue between artist and the land, and the land itself is used as a metaphor for reflection on wider issues.

Working in acrylics on canvas, using vibrant expressive colours, personal notation and mark-making, together with a fascination with the aerial view of the landscape, Wendy adds many layers of meaning and expression to her work, capturing the energy and intuitive experience of the land.

The landscape of Maleny with its luminous qualities, vast horizons, precipitous edges and intersection with the sky has greatly influenced her work. She also draws upon the symbolic forces of nature the earth, sun and moon- looking to the landscape as a source of spirituality.

Wendy's landscapes are not strictly representational but are about a sense of place and they demonstrate her attempt to adjust the landscape to her own highly original style. The Maleny landscape has a raw and urgent energy of its own, and Wendy's paintings grow from that earth.

In the Stillness - Barry Smith

I believe that stillness and reflective opportunities are found in many settings including our houses, gardens and in nature.  I also believe that the forms and objects that help us to find or focus on such stillness do not need to be made from precious metals and gems.

In my work for this exhibition I have bought together discarded timber, patina metal, rods, recycled copper and brass plate and objects as well as wire and rivets. Each of the four categories of my work functions in its own way and own place to support efforts to find stillness, quietness or reflection.

Each piece in the Font series is intended for a quiet place in the garden. Water in fonts is often used for renewal; or a still small body of water can give a sense of slowing down as one pauses to gaze into it.

I would hope that holding the Meditation Bowls or being able to focus on their form and message can help to quieten the monkey mind whether sitting quietly outside or in the house.

I always associate burning and smelling incense with cleansing, quietness and renewal. I have created the Incense Burners to be used inside or outside to create a sacred place and time.

I find that I can go through a whole day being controlled by one thought or event after another. The Words of Inspiration provide the opportunity to be mindful of a least one thought that can permeate the day or a quiet period of reflection.

In the end there are many ways and places to find stillness.

In the Stillness - Fiona Dempster
I respond to quiet art.  I like work that doesn't shout; work that is calm and quietly draws you in and asks you to spend some time with it. This is in part why I love artists books - books allow the viewer to be intimate with the work; to have a one on one experience and to be drawn into the artist's world, often quietly and slowly.
This series of works includes a small number of artists books as well as a larger number of wall pieces.  With these works I have reflected what happens for me when I stop and am still and am quiet; as well as my desire to promote peace in small and everyday ways.  Some of the works involve inspirational words that can remind us of our potential; reminders which often come when being still or quiet allows them in.

My love of book and words and text mean I often express these sentiments, thoughts and desires through calligraphic means and in this exhibition I have used a range of materials and forms to produce the written word. My prints suggest the tranquillity that serene landscapes offer; for when we stop and celebrate the beauty of small moments and recognise the wonder of the world, our spirits are nourished.

Being. Being still. Being quiet. Being peace.
