MICHAEL PUGH - clayworks
Michael began his journey in ceramics in 1970, working full time and living from the sale of his pots from the beginning of 1973. He built a studio on the slopes of an old banana farm, in the town of Buderim, Queensland. This is now engulfed in rainforest and tropical gardens. There are no walls, windows or doors in the studio. This allows open contact with the bush and an uninterrupted flow, which helps in the transference of inspiration from nature. In the summer of 1996, Michael worked and gained valuable experience in the town of Mashiko, north of Tokyo. This is the town where Hamada Shoji settled in 1930 and began making pots. He became a living treasure and by his example became a great teacher and inspiration to potters all over the world.
In 2004 Michael worked in Jenggala Keramik in Bali as an artist in residence for 3 months, which culminated in an exhibition at the gallery in Jenggala. He has exhibited and sold his work throughout Australia, New Zealand, America, UK, Japan and Bali. Michael Pugh's studio in Buderim is open to the public, where the garden and rainforest can be enjoyed by all.
